Standard 1: Mission, Vision and Core Values
The effective educational leader develops, advocates and enacts a shared mission, vision and core values.
As a leader you share the mission, vision, and core values with stakeholders making it clear the organizations goals. You use the statements to build a cohesive plan and communicate through trainings how the plan impacts the overall district/school building. The values are seen through activities and actions throughout the school year.
Example: Vision and Mission Statement
In my district I joined a professional learning community (PLC) to work on the culture of our school building and district. I selected the Belonging PLC because I wanted to support the sense of belonging of all staff and students on campus. Being a school of choice students come into our school as sophomores or juniors from 8 other districts around the county. They do not know each other and have to start over. We do not have sports teams and students get to know the people in their programs very well but sometimes do not feel like they belong to the school as a whole. As part of this team we created a Vision, Mission, and Action Steps to build a sense of community.
We started with clubs already on campus to devise a plan that the clubs would work together versus against each other for example, Key Club and National Honor Society both had the idea of have a canned food drive. Students in either club previously felt that they "stole" our idea. Instead of taking that approach the message was if we are doing this to help others, your clubs can work together to divide the load of work. Creating a community of caring and inclusiveness versus us/them.
A student advisory council was formed. Previously students had very little voice. Since we do not have the traditional responsibilities of a class council such as homecoming, prom, senior gift the idea of student council is left to home schools where students graduate from. In our district we needed to find a way to include the student voice to form the belonging, this was part of our action steps. I nominated students and gave them a responsibility of leadership.
To further solidify my understanding of this standard I would like to point out that this was a group effort of a team. A shared vision. I did not develop the language alone, I did not complete all the tasks alone, I shared in, and continue to share in the responsibilities of the Belonging Professional Learning Community because I believe in their mission and know we need a team to continue to build on the initiatives we started.
